Kits
for Flying Bird Science Olympiad back
Several flapping-wing
model kits are available to help you prepare for the Science Olympiad
Flying Bird event. For the best flight times, you'll probably want
to design and build your own ornithopter, eventually. But you should
start out with an easy-to-build kit until you know what you're doing.
Here are the available options:

|
|
Falcon
This is the easiest to build, and this is where you should start.
Falcon flies up to 20 seconds (or 30 using contest grade rubber).
You'll have to replace the plastic wing covering with tissue
to comply with Science Olympiad rules. Available from the Ornithopter
Zone's online store.

EZ Ornithopter
This one uses plastic fittings like the Falcon, but the design
is somewhat more complicated. Performance is similar. Requires
modification to comply with Science Olympiad rules. This is
not available from the Ornithopter Zone, but your local hobby
shop might have it. Give them a call! |

Phoenix
This balsa-and-tissue model kit is a little more challenging
to build, but it offers better performance (up to 1 minute)
and it complies with Science Olympiad rules. Available from
the Ornithopter Zone
and Pitsco.
(Pitsco calls it the Funbird, but it's the same kit.) |

Seabird
This is like the Phoenix but with longer wings. It's a little
harder to build, and it probably won't give you better flight
times. It is interesting to compare the two models, however.
Available from the Ornithopter
Zone. |
